Description :

Soapstone carving in class

Grade 3 requires a deep study and dive into the world of the First Nations in Canada.

In order to initiate the students to a major native expression (creating arts with natural elements) and to build a dialog with the local communities, my coworker and I have taught our classes how to carve soapstone.

I first taught my students about the Inuit people: we read legends, we studied their way of living, and their connection to their environnement. Then, using kits purchased from our local Studiostone Creative, we carved wolves and bears with native technics.
